In a video from Greg McHale, hunters take on challenging winter conditions in pursuit of bison. This video break down everything from the prep work to the first hunt on this day. This is part one.
From Greg McHale:
“Winter has tightened its grip on the land as I head back into the wilderness, where cold air hangs heavy and the snow stretches unbroken in every direction. In this season, travel is slow and deliberate, and every mile covered comes at a cost. The silence out here is complete, broken only by the steady hum of the snow machine and the wind moving across the open country.
This hunt is for the bison—an animal shaped by the extremes of this landscape. Massive, resilient, and built for winter, they move through terrain that tests both machine and man. Following them means long days navigating deep snow, frozen rivers, and ground that offers no forgiveness for mistakes.
As the weather shifts without warning, the challenge becomes more than just finding animals. It’s about managing cold, conserving energy, and making decisions that keep the hunt moving forward safely. Signs are scattered across the land—tracks pressed deep into the snow, trails worn through drifts—but the bison themselves remain just out of reach.
This is Part 1 of the winter bison hunt. The pursuit has begun, and the country is already making its expectations clear.”
