Gear Review: The Pelican MPB35 Mobile Protect Backpack

Pelican Mobile Backpack

Backpacks go with us everywhere. From the gym to the range to the field, a good backpack is almost an extension of one’s body, and since May, that is exactly what the Pelican MPB35 Mobile Protect Backpack has been for me.

Like most people, I keep busy. And this summer has been especially busy. A 3AM wakeup gets me some office hours before heading to the gym then hiking for two hours in the Santa Cruz Mountains to prepare for archery deer season. Then throughout the day, I am often working on the move, carrying a laptop (and sometimes even two), files, food, and more, as I take on the day and various needs throughout it.

With all of these different activities, finding a good, versatile backpack that serves me well with all of the different things I do can be tough. And frankly, if the Pelican MPB35 Mobile Protect Backpack fell short in any way, it would be tossed by the wayside. I simply cannot deal with deficient gear. However, in every way, this backpack served every need I have and has been by my side, day in and day out, for the last three months.

Once again, I couldn’t be more impressed with Pelican gear innovation and design. The Pelican Mobile Protect Backpack is a 35 liter pack that is impressively durable and tough — hallmarks of any Pelican product. Considering what I put this backpack through, if it had any vulnerabilities, they would have been revealed by now, but at the end of the day, this pack went over the river and through the woods and endured a good amount of abuse just about every day. The result? This backpack stands triumphant, ready to take on more.

The toughness of the Pelican Mobile Protect Backpack is the result of materials and design. The DWR-coated 1000 denier nylon outer shell is water resistant and handles the elements well. Backpacks are often prone to fail due to one weak section or strained part. However, this overbuilt backpack is strong, it doesn’t carry differently or sag with heavy items, and its shape and compression-molded EVA shoulder straps allow for a balanced and comfortable carry, even for hours on end. I often had a laptop and 36-liter water aluminum water bottle stashed in the backpack, and these heavier items never dominated the contents or reshaped the bag. The thick shell is a key reason.

The Pelican MPB35 Mobile Protect Backpack also has a big opening that adds convenience when digging for items. And organization pockets inside are ideal for smaller items like car keys, a phone, a wallet, a knife, loose change, and so on. Also, a laptop sleeve keeps that essential item in place and easy to pull in and out. And the thick denier shell and padded back give some peace of mind that your computer is less likely to take abuse.

The Pelican MPB35 Mobile Protect Backpack is available in four color options — Black, OD Green, Gray, and Realtree Edge/Tan — and the backpack costs $196.95 and has a lifetime warranty.
