When mountain hunting, it’s vital that every piece of gear is exactly what you need. An entire day of hiking and hunting in the elements can be taxing, and one flawed gear item can have a big impact on your day. This understanding of gear and the needs of hunters is a starting point for the folks at KUIU, and this is the reason why so many hunters — especially in mountains locations look first to KUIU for their gear.
One piece of gear that is especially important is a backpack, and KUIU is known for their packs. We’ve been testing one of their day packs — the KUIU Venture 2300 — and we have to say, this pack will definitely be the go-to now for all archery hunts and most rifle hunts.
The KUIU Venture 2300 is an internal frame pack that is light, comfortable to wear, and is perfect for minimalists who don’t want to leave any essentials behind.
First Impressions
Out of the box, the KUIU Venture 2300 looked small and felt light. Honestly, out of the box, the size brought mixed feelings. However, it quickly became apparent that the strap system and the sections behind it sort of allows this back to be small when needed and expand enough to pack in gear. The 2300 in the pack’s name refers to the 2300 cubic inch size — a capacity that’s significant and also impressive when considering the fact that the bag has a slightly narrow design and weighs only just over three pounds.
In Action
In the field, the KUIU Venture 2300 pack is everything you might expect from KUIU. The most important aspect for me is that you can comfortably wear this pack all day without feeling uncomfortable pull on the shoulders, and it’s easy to have a balanced feel that makes it easy to forget you are wearing the backpack.
As always, KUIU thinks of things you don’t know you needed — such as snug side pockets that help keep items from falling out, easy-to-use zipper pulls (that are convenient and also quiet), and a strap system throughout that allows you to customize the pack to your own taste.
Finally, one very nice feature is how many pockets this pack has. From waist belt pockets to three internal mesh pockets, you can make a system that allows you to have all key items just where you want them. After all, we’re all familiar with how frustrating it is to waste time digging through your pack to try to find something. That’s time lost.
Lastly, the CORDURA® material is extremely durable and is a material I trust in thick brush and other tough terrain.
As far as sizing, there is a medium and a large. KUIU recommends large for people over 5’11”. I am 5’10” and preferred the large. The Venture 2300 comes in four colors: Vias, Valo, Verde, and Steel, and the Venture 2300 costs $219.
