YETI does it again. For the second time this year, I tested a new piece of YETI gear and discovered in the process that it’s a piece that I’ll never part with and suddenly can’t (or at least would prefer not to) do without.
I started using the YETI Hopper BackFlip 24 this fall during deer season. The first trip I used the Hopper BackFlip 24 wasn’t actually a hunt, but I immediately realized the value of the soft cooler. On a drive from California to Colorado, the weather was frigid, and I was always on the move going to and from the car with the backpack with me. Inside was a laptop, a camera, a lens, and other important and valuable items. It just made sense: Keep these items in a durable soft cooler and the temperature ought to be somewhat regulated inside, and because it’s such an easy item to wear, I never had to worry about valuables left in the car. Not ever originally planning to use the Hopper BackFlip 24 for such items, it’s already been a go-to for tech gear on a fishing trip and other trips since.
But after all, the YETI Hopper BackFlip 24 is designed to be a soft cooler, and when I filled a mule deer tag in Montana this year, this backpack perfectly helped me get my meat back home to California. I’m a traveling hunter, and that travel happens by both vehicle and plane. In both cases, the YETI Hopper BackFlip 24 perfectly fits in many places that a larger hard cooler won’t. For example, I didn’t have my truck when I was bringing the meat back from Montana. Instead, I had my wife’s Subaru that had limited space on that trip. I was able to fit the entire muley in the YETI Hopper BackFlip 24 and in another soft cooler and take up minimal space. Additionally, a YETI Hopper BackFlip 24 (at the time this post is published) is allowed checked in on flights and will cut down on weight and help get meat home.
I love this soft cooler. Loaded with frozen meat, the ergonomic fit makes it relatively easy to carry a heavy load. The shell is tough and can take tough conditions and handling. The leakproof zipper is critical for keeping things cool and gives you peace of mind for your meat. That alone is worth it!
From now on, I’ll be loading my YETI Hopper BackFlip 24 with gear on trips and hopefully returning hope from with meat inside. Hot weather hunt? This will keep the meat cooler. Axis deer in Hawaii? You bet, that meat will come home in the YETI.
