We recently spent a good bit of time with the new KUIU Divide 1200 pack. This backpack is truly unlike any other we’ve come across — and we love it.
First things first: Eliminate any pre-existing expectations you might have for backpacks. The Divide 1200 pack is different. In fact, it’s so different that it does take some getting used to. The first thing you’ll probably notice is the KUIU Divide 1200 is quite small. Imagine a great small day pack. I am 5’10” and 160 pounds, and the pack still seems small. Additionally, it took some time to get the straps the way I wanted them without feeling like it was a poor fit. That said, once I got used to this pack, I’ve been using it every day and couldn’t be more impressed.
This is the perfect backpack for scouting, hiking, and working out. Now my favorite pack for all of those purposes, this review could rave on quite a bit. Will this be a go-to pack on hunts? Probably not. But I can’t think of any pack I’d rather use for scouting, hiking, and some short-duration hunts such as a quick morning or evening hunt.
One of the things that’s important to know about this pack is that there are two separately divided sections of this backpack. Imagine the main body of a backpack cut in half and turned into two connected sections. In the middle, between two two separate sections is an area that can be used for a spotting scope on a tripod or other long, oversized items you might want to carry. This is often where I’ll put an oversized water bottle. For scouting, it makes a lot of sense to use this for your tripod.
One of the benefits of the two separate sections is that along with five internal mesh compartments and the two side pockets, you can really be organized. Reaching into the pack and not being able to find something seems unimaginable.
The KUIU Divide 1200 pack is loaded with additional features. There is a clip to secure your water bladder, and there is a hole to feed the tube out through the top. Horse shoe zippers add to the convenience and accessibility, and the Cordura fabric is just want you want for durability.
Finally, this pack just feels great to wear all day. The padded mesh straps are very easy on the shoulders, and the padded vented mesh separates your potentially sweaty back from the pack itself.
This is one of those rare gear pieces that is so well-designed and innovative that we truly can’t say enough. I just know this — I’ve been using this pack every day couldn’t be more happy with it.
