Gear Review: The YETI Lowlands Blanket

YETI Lowlands blanket

A couple of years ago, we reviewed the YETI Rambler One Gallon Jug — a stainless steel jug that sells for about $130. Initially there was some suspicion about the price and overall need. But in no time, this product saved a fortune in one use water containers (on long road trips alone) and has proven to be a must-have on hot weather float trips and winter camping trips.

In a similar way, the new YETI Lowlands Waterproof Blanket raised an eyebrow. A $200 blanket?! But, yet again, YETI stepped to the plate and delivered a product that is a game changer in many ways and now has a permanent place among most-used gear.

Most of us have probably taken blankets from home and brought them into the outdoors. And for those who have done this, it’s likely that those blankets in some way got mangled, stained, and tarnished, and it’s also likely that the blanket under-performed.

While the cost of the YETI Lowlands Blanket might raise an eyebrow, it also raises the bar. First, it can function as a waterproof blanket or tarp. You know how gnarly your tent gets from morning dew, condensation, and more. This blanket can work as a dry baselayer in the tent or a source of insulation on top as a blanket. It’s also ideal for the back seats of the car when your wet dog hops in and rolls around. In fact, it even repels pet hair and dirt, and because it’s waterproof, you won’t be absorbing all of that wet dog smell. (According to YETI, it also keeps off burrs!)

The YETI Lowlands Blanket is also intelligently designed. One side of the blanket is the waterproof/industrial side, and the other is the comfortable/soft/insulated side. In a way, it’s multi-use by design and even includes loops on the corners and in the middle so the blanket can be secured.

So far, the YETI Lowlands Blanket has been phenomenal for use on the beach, for putting on/taking off waders behind the truck in dusty areas, over the back seats for the dog, on the floor of the tent for camping, and on the bed at home. Who knows where this will be used in the years ahead!

Unfolded, the YETI Lowlands Blanket is 78″ by 55″ and it conveniently comes in a case to take up minimal space and be easy to keep in the car, carry through the backcountry — you name it. It retails for $199.99 and comes in Fireside Red or Smoke Blue. It’s also easily washed in the washing machine. The YETI Lowlands Blanket is worth every penny.
