In a video series, Greg McHale heads deep into the backcountry to hunt Dall sheep. This is part one of four.
From Greg McHale:
“Sheep hunting has always held a special place for me. It demands everything—patience, endurance, and a willingness to keep moving when the mountains seem intent on pushing you back. In country like this, nothing is guaranteed, and every step forward has to be earned.
Part 1 of this hunt begins high in the mountains, where long climbs and thin air test both body and resolve. The days are filled with steady effort—sidehilling across steep faces, glassing distant ridges, and covering ground where mistakes carry real consequences. Mentally, the challenge is just as demanding, as decisions made early can shape the entire hunt.
The rams live where the country is at its most unforgiving, moving through terrain that leaves little room for error. Finding them requires discipline and restraint, knowing when to push and when to stay the course. The reward isn’t just the chance at a mature ram, but the experience of matching yourself against a landscape that refuses to compromise.
This is Part 1 of 4 in the Staying the Course sheep hunt—a journey defined by persistence, hard lessons, and the quiet satisfaction that comes from embracing one of the most demanding hunts the mountains have to offer.”
