Video: Staying The Course: A Sheep Hunt, Part 3

In a video series, Greg McHale heads deep into the backcountry to hunt Dall sheep. This is part three of four.

From Greg McHale:

“By this point in the hunt, fatigue is no longer something I push through—it’s something I carry with me. Every climb takes more effort, and every decision carries greater weight. The mountains begin to feel smaller, yet somehow more demanding.

In Part 3, the pressure builds. I locate rams in difficult terrain, and the challenge shifts from finding animals to deciding how—and if—a responsible approach is possible. Wind, distance, and exposure all factor into choices that can’t be rushed.

Sheep hunting often comes down to moments like this: standing still, studying the country, and weighing patience against opportunity. The margin for error is thin, and the mountains are always waiting to remind me who’s in control.”
